In a recent conversation, K Royal shared a story that surprised us — not because it was flashy, but because it was quietly powerful.
K had signed up to compete in a pageant later in life, something she did as a way to challenge herself and reclaim confidence. But when the event arrived, she was dealing with serious physical limitations and using a walker. By any reasonable standard, it would have been easy — even understandable — to bow out.
Instead, she went anyway.
Her reasoning was disarmingly simple: “The hotel was paid for. The flights were paid for. The pageant was paid for… I might as well show up and have fun.”
She wasn’t fully healed. She wasn’t at her strongest. She didn’t feel “ready.”
And she won.
The point isn’t the crown. It’s the mindset.
So many executive women postpone visibility until conditions are ideal — until energy returns, confidence steadies, the role feels more secure, or the timing feels safer. But leadership growth rarely waits for perfect alignment.
Sometimes momentum comes from presence, not preparation.
K’s story reminds us that showing up isn’t a declaration that you’re finished — it’s a commitment to keep going. And often, it’s in those imperfect moments that confidence quietly expands.
You don’t have to wait to be ready to take up space.
You grow into readiness by being there.
